What is Casa delle Farfalle?

What is Casa delle Farfalle?

Casa delle Farfalle is a nature attraction in Milano Marittima’s pinewood, built around butterflies, insects and their habitats. Its name means “House of Butterflies,” but the visit includes more than the main greenhouse: there is also an Insect House, a garden and a smaller greenhouse for native butterflies.

The 500 m² tropical greenhouse recreates a rainforest-like environment. Hundreds of butterflies fly freely among the plants, in warm, humid conditions: the Milano Marittima tourism site gives the temperature as 28–30°C and humidity as 70%.

Allow for the contrast between that greenhouse and the outdoor areas. The venue recommends dressing in layers, and says sunny days make tropical butterflies more likely to fly.

The main greenhouse is the centrepiece, while the other areas add a closer look at insects and local butterfly species. You can move between the habitats and outdoor garden as part of your visit.

In the Insect House, live invertebrates include crickets, praying mantises, bees, beetles and stick insects. Outside, the butterfly garden has a botanical route featuring 20 plant species. Il Bruco, the native-butterfly greenhouse, was created with the University of Bologna to support the reintroduction of some local species into nature.

A small lake and a botanical route featuring plants from the local pinewood are also part of the grounds. A themed shop and a snack point with ice cream, drinks, crisps and coffee round out the facilities. Picnic benches and chairs are available in the garden, and restaurants and other venues are about 500 metres away.
