What does MUSA tell visitors about salt?

MUSA explains how salt production shaped Cervia’s work and history. The museum grew from the work of Gruppo Culturale Civiltà Salinara, and its collections bring together documents, tools and photographs connected with the salt workers and the historic salt pans.

Salt-making is also part of Cervia’s food heritage: Cervia salt has been recognised as a Slow Food Presidio since 2004. Among the objects linked to production is the burchiella, a traditional boat that carried salt from the pans to the storage warehouses.

The collections include equipment used in salt production, photographs of salt workers and objects associated with the historic salt pans. Together, these objects show both the work involved and the tools used to move and store the salt.

MUSA also includes Salina Camillone, an outdoor section that is an integral part of the museum. It is the last remaining Cervia salt pan where salt is still produced by hand using the traditional method.
